During spring 2015, Room 2 students read and discussed multiple sources covering Mountain View geography, history, and culture. They focused on the baylands ecosystem and weather, the Ohlone Indians who once inhabited the bay area, the immigrants who founded the city at the turn of the twentieth century, and the people who make up Silicon Valley today. They participated in field work at local nature preserves, historical societies, businesses, and nonprofit organizations. Throughout their process, students documented important information contributing to the development of the community. At the same time, they analyzed children’s activity books, which included coloring pages, crossword puzzles, mazes, and word searches. They organized many of their findings into their own activity book in order to share them with children unfamiliar with Mountain View as they once were.
